Street Trends meet High Fashion!!

As my final project for class we've been given a huge task...

Discuss all 8 basic street trends
  • Teddyboys
  • Zoot Zuits
  • Beatniks
  • Disco
  • Mods
  • Hip Hop
  • Punk
  • Hippies
THEN discuss how they have influenced fashion by finding them on the runway!

Since all glory comes from daring to begin.... shall we?!

TEDDY BOYS:

Some say the rise of the teddy boy began back in 1953 as a revolt against the norm and to shock their parents generation. As they began to embrace American rock and roll, they became the first true youth subculture. While girls wore pony tails, boys tried many different slicked hairstyles.

From the hair, to the specific fitted jackets, to the skinny ties and trousers, these and dead-on teddy boys.

The Zoot Suit

The zoot suit was a revolt against manners of subservience in the 1930's.
The term "zoot" actually came from the jazz scene and was worn as a reflection of extravagent style. Pants tapered at the ankle and long jackets with daunting shoulder pads made this a look to be remembered.

Here we see the pants and hats that really reflect the zoot style from the 40's.

Beatniks

The Beat generation was created to characterize the underground, anti-conformist youth gathering in New York at that time in the late 1940's.
Though this look and term has a connotation of crime and violence attached to it, the look actually quite understated. Bold Stripes and dark berets, turtle neck sweaters, and sunglasses make up this look.

Betsey Johnson went for "Beatnik Chic" in her February 2008 runway show. Here you see the berets and dark sunglasses with the stripes and dark cloting. You can also see in the first image how the setting of the show is very underground and beatnik-esque.

Disco

Now while disco isn't my favorite style of clothing of all time, I think one of my favorite Freaks and Geeks episodes is where Nick Andolpolis learns how to disco at the bowling alley. :) Disco came about in the 1970's in the night club scene. It was a rebellion against the main stream rock and roll music of that time. Disco is know for their glitz and glam. Silk shirts and bright colors. Bell bottom pants and scarves.

Matthew Williamson 2009 Runway show(Top) and Naeem Khan Spring Runway 2009 shows perfect ecamples of a throwback to disco.
MW shows us the shien and frill as well as the ruffles and off the shoulder tops much like the disco look. NK shows us the fun tassels and bright colors like most disco attire.

Mods

Were a group started in Great Britain in the 1950's. They were the MODern group of kids formt he coffee houses who were anti-dirty bike, anti-dirty leather and anti-rocker in every way. Twiggy is a great example of Mod during that time. She is the first supermodel and was discovered at age 16 by Nigel Davis. She is mostly known for her atypical looks, short hair and unusual make up style. It consisted of long bangs, slick hair, geometric prints, bright colors.

What Michael Kors in the Spring of 2009 and Paco Rabanne in the Spring of 2006 are showing is the look of the modern girl. With color and bold shape and lines and clean from head to toe. Also the length of skirt is accurate.

 Hip Hop

Though I think this is a relevant street trend, I can't say that I myself have "gotten into it". The  Hip Hop movement could have begun as early as the 1970's. Here we see the loud ostantaseous jewlery and gold chaims with the jumpsuit and and tennis shoes. OFten the add a hat to the whole ensemble.

Ed Hardy  "Love May Kill Me Slowly" Runway Show 2007

Here we see a different kind of man on the runway with less chaims but the same swagger. The hats and colors, as well as the graphic element of the designs as a whole, really help make this a hip hop look.

Punk

Invented in Britain in the Mid 70's, The Sex Pistols truly helped to bring about the whole movement. Pretty much against any authority of any kind, a punk is a self-proclaimed is a badass. Their street trend is based on complete and total self expression with the added intimidation factor of course. Black leather, crazy hair, crazy makeup, extreme to the tenth degree!
Punk Groups in UK and New York, 1980, 1990

Here in 2010 Vivienne Westwood creates a interesting line loaded with social comentary about today's youth, let alone today's punk revolution, which my research tells me "is not dead".  Here we see the crazy ahir and clothing as well as crazy print to add to the concept. I also think she managed to pull off Punk Formal ware which I'm in love with!

HIPPIES!!!

I saved my favorite genre for last! Did you know that the term Hippie actually came from the jeans this particular group used to wear that hugged their hips! ... I know right?! Anyways, Hippies are a rare and interesting culture of youths in the 1960's that had a lot going on. They were about the music, they were about anything peace and nothing war, and they were obviously about psychodelics. Without a doubt, the 1960s were the biggest decade of change in American history. The Vietnam War and protests, the counterculture movement, the Civil Rights movement.. From the clothes to the hair, the stylists nationwide picked away at the status quo to create more audacious new looks.

;) Hippie wear was often jeans and florals. Long flowy dresses and headbands, and long beautiful hair!

 Matthew Williamson Spring 2009

Here in the Bebe collection we see many earth tones and modest prints in the beautiful flowing skirts and romper. The long hair on all models goes perfectly with the whole look. In the Williamson show we see an example of the long flow dress with the belt accent to bring in the waist as well as the colorful prints to really bring the HIPpie look home!

NEW STREET TRENDS

Ever Heard of Tom's Shoes?

Tom's shoes was a company created in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie as a movement to get shoes to children all around the world. Many children around the world grow up barefoot and they are at risk whether they play at home or in school. some walk for miles each day. Well, something that started as a good cause has now taken off as a shoe trend and even has debuted in a runway show this year! The shoe also started off as a modest shoe and now comes in many different colors and designs.
I believe that this generation wants to help wherever they can, as were and be green/ help chic in the process so though these modest shoes are slightly expensive, the meaning behind them is far more exciting for every time you buy a pair of Tom's Shoes, one pair goes to a small child in need in another country.

Whitney Pozgay's Spring Line

Tye Dye's Comin Back!

The Tie Dye came about in the 1960's hippie movement (you all know how I feel about this) as a simple carefree way to show that you were for all colors. It was also trippy. lol
Now I see this everywhere lately. All the young teens I coach have large tie dying parties and wear the shirts with jeans and jackets as well as tie dying everythign else like plain white jersey dresses and so on. Even Calvin Klein showed us Tie Dye is back in his Spring 2010 runway show at Mercedez Benz Fashion Week in New York.

I truly loved this entire class.. thanks for everything!
